I went out Sunday morning for a short time. “God is in this story” by Big Daddy Weave and Katy Nicole played on the car radio. It hit me in such a powerful way and has continued to be something of a mantra that I whisper under my breath. At that point Jerry had been struggling with some sort of infection for almost a week which had involved an urgent care visit and many conversations with health care providers. The circumstances escalated later Sunday making an emergency room trip necessary. And from there, test results and symptoms necessitated hospital admittance. That is where we still are, and I write this post from his hospital room. Hopefully test results will come in soon giving us more insight into how to better treat this infection and turn this thing around. I’m still whispering. God is in this story. I don’t understand all the how’s of that, and I stopped asking why many years ago when we encounter things like this. I’ve quoted C.S. Lewis often, “We, in our agony, s

Not Going Out of Business

This picture is from the front door of what used to be a beloved restaurant, Sandcastle, in a favorite vacation spot. Closed now, whoever put up the sign was feeling the loss as we are. The restaurant’s idiosyncrasies were memorable. There was a map of the world and the US just inside the front door where you could place a push pin to show where your home was. The maps were nearly covered with pushpins from years of people wanting to leave their little mark behind. The tables once held sand buckets with napkins inside, and if you were sitting on the front porch, watch out for birds trying to steal crumbs from your table. Their breakfast buffet was incredible, and even though I’m gluten free for quite a while now, I still dream of their waffles. Yes, feeling the loss. In Faith in the Fashion District , I shared that I can’t shop at going out of business sales. No bargain I find there will offset the grief I feel over lost jobs, lost community, and an empty store front left behind.

When you need a defender

I have a pile of brown thrashers in a bush near my house right now. When I first discovered the nest with eggs, I received a crash course in brown thrasher behavior. I poked my nose into a bush to get a closer look, and the mama flew out making it clear that I was not to enter her air space. Her behavior caused me to have flashbacks of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, “The Birds.” This encounter helped me realize I was not going to be snapping pictures of the little ones every day like I did with a wrens’ nest. Later when I researched brown thrashers, I learned they are territorial and fierce defenders of the nest. They have even been known to attack humans. Yeah, I got that. The picture I snapped above was done quickly during a brief time the mom was absent. In recent days, I’ve been made aware of a story that concerns someone I’ve had the privilege of meeting. She has a child who has profound developmental challenges. He was receiving care but needed assistance on a much higher level.
