When there's another season of waiting

On a recent beach trip, I rose earlier than my crowd to take painting reference photos at sunrise. I’m always surprised to see how many folks are on the shore that early in the morning waiting for the sun to peep above the horizon. With beach blankets spread, entire families gaze east waiting for the fiery gold and orange hues to spread across the sky. Words from the Psalmist come to mind, “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning” (Psalm 130:5-6). That word wait in the original language has some interesting nuances. It can mean bound together, expect, hope for or look for. In seasons of waiting, when we don’t know what the future may hold, our best and highest path should be to watch for the Lord and trust his word. The wedding and what we can't imagine

In a flurry of white and bountiful blooms, our son and his new wife were married this past week. It was a relatively small gathering with family and a few of our son’s and his wife’s friends, but an occasion of such joy, we thought we might just float away. And even the rain which had threatened for hours held off giving us an evening of undampened celebration. As always at weddings, I came away wishing I had more time with everyone. I wanted to speak more with my sister and her family whom I don’t see very often and the sisters of my new daughter-in-law’s mother. I’m sure we would have found much in common. I longed to spend more time with my son’s friends, several of which I have known since he was in high school. But the moments ticked away, leaving us hoping for another time. C.S. Hearing and Answering

While in worship recently at a sweet baby dedication, we sang a song whose lyrics in part came from Psalm 34:4. In fact, the pastor, to emphasize a point, used them in a sermon. I dug a little deeper into the meaning of the verse. In the NIV, it reads, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” ” In other translations, it is "I sought the Lord, and he heard me." T he lyrics have “He heard and He answered." When I went to the original Hebrew word, anah, for answered or heard in that verse, I found that it means both heard and answered. For God to hear means for God to answer. I began thinking of all the times just recently, where my prayers have been heard and answered. Many, many times. He heard, and because he did, he answered. That Hebrew word also means shout, sing, testify, and bear witness. Honestly, it kind of bends my brain that one word can hold so many nuances of meaning.
