Day by Day

For some time, a thought has been dropping into my spirit, which has to do with increasing my focus on cultivating an awareness of the Lord’s presence.

That thought has recalled part of a prayer I memorized early in my walk with God and credited to a thirteenth century saint. “… may I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly, day by day.” In a cultural reference that is sure to date me, some of you may remember similar words used in a song in the1970’s musical, Godspell. In that version the first line was rendered “see thee more clearly.” The saint’s prayer was a powerful focus for me early in my spiritual journey. I repeated those lines countless times over the years as I sought to live in the conscious presence of the Lord.

The way we cultivate that awareness of God’s presence is not all at once, but moment by moment, and day by day as the prayer says. And as we move through various seasons in our lives, it may rest upon us to seek the Lord even more amid whatever challenges we may face. Because no matter what we face, God is present and God is at work. During tough times, we may tend to pull away, but those are opportunities, to press in and ask, “How is God present here?”

We may not see at first, but if we keep our hearts tuned to him, his presence will become clear. A farmer friend we knew used to say regarding God’s work, “You have to pay attention.” And he was right!

Here is the full text of the prayer:

Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ

For all the benefits Thou hast given me,
For all the pains and insults Thou hast borne for me.
O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother,
May I know Thee more clearly,
Love Thee more dearly,
Follow Thee more nearly day by day. Amen.”

I hope this seven-hundred-year-old prayer is as meaningful for you as it has been to me. I’m doubling down in praying it at the present time. Feel free to join me.

“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11).
