As many of you know, an accident in May left me with two fractured wrists which required surgery and months of physical therapy to regain the use of my hands. During that time, many things I had always done seemed like a distant dream. One of the most important people in this process was my hand therapist. I met this person the day my casts were removed when my hands seemed unusable like floppy fish. The therapist made the splints that would support my wrists and hands in the recovery process. At that time, we found we were both connected to a university student ministry and so, from there we continued to form a bond. I found this person to be compassionate, caring, and knowledgeable. The therapist had a close friend who was in an accident that also left the friend with two broken wrists, so the therapists’ knowledge was not just textbook but from life experience as well. Flat on the Floor Grateful

This has been a season of life where we hardly caught our breath before something else happened. It began with a heart stent for Jerry last fall then proceeded to a diagnosis of bladder cancer a couple of months later. Then we both had pneumonia, and I had a tough time recovering. He had surgery for the cancer, which resulted in challenging complications … and then contracted covid. On the heels of that I was involved in an accident that left both wrists fractured, resulting in a long recovery. This fall, Jerry has gone through tests to make sure the cancer is at bay and is also being watched for another health challenge. And yet, Jerry has hardly missed a beat in all his responsibilities, and I had a new book release this fall. Grace upon grace. We are also celebrating several milestones this year. Bells Across the Snow for those who are sad

For many, the Christmas season is a hard time for various reasons. For some, the loss of loved ones is more keenly felt this time of year. For others the bright wrapping and lilting carols stand in contrast to an ongoing struggle with sadness, or serious illness. That’s why I’ve always appreciated that on Christmas Eve the devotional, Streams in the Desert, carries the poem , “Bells Across the Snow” by one of my favorite hymn writers, Frances Ridley Harvegal (Take My Life and Let it Be). It speaks to the tension between sorrow and joy, which almost everyone at some time in their life, experiences at Christmas. O Christmas, merry Christmas!
