Backstory, the last chapter, and the answer at last

As Memorial Day approaches, I came on this post and knew I had to share it again. For all of those who have lost loved ones in service to our country, our prayers are with you. Years ago, I sat in a class by a prolific author. She declared, “Back story belongs in the back of the book.” I etched those words in my notebook, and every time I start to give a character’s whole life story in the first chapter, these words sound in my head. But however much we construct our books with the backstory of a character’s motivation in the last chapter, life itself rarely works out that way. But, if writing a novel with my dad as the protagonist, in one circumstance, it’s almost as if a novelist had constructed the plot. My dad, a Korean Conflict air force veteran, was stationed in several places in this country and spent time in England as well. For those of you who may follow my weekly ponderings, I’m taking a few breaks this summer because Jerry and I are working on a book project together related to his UGA football playing days (Hopefully this will not require marriage counseling. LOL.) We aim to have the book out early fall. I’ll be around on June 16, June 30, be off the month of July, and then resume August 4. Eight years ago, I wrote the first draft of a novel entitled, Currahee . It gained some favorable comments from editors when my agent first sent it out, but alas, no one offered me a contract. I continued to revise it, but a few years ago, though I loved the story, I didn’t know where else to turn, so the story became one more file forgotten on my hard drive. Meanwhile, I went on and wrote other stories, one of which became Give My Love to the Chestnut Trees , which of course is now in print. A year ago, I’d just finished yet another manuscript, which was making the rounds of publishers when my sister said, “I think you should go back to Currahee .” She loved the story and insisted that I take another look at it. So, I did. I reread it and decided to change it from third person to first, which meant removing two other points of view. Additionally, I removed more than 15,000 words and added back around 20,000.
