When we need a way

As I make my way again through the Bible in a year-ish, the chapters in 2 Samuel 11-13 once more weigh down my heart. I've written about them before, but this time with a bit of a different slant. They tell the sad story of David and Bathsheba’s immoral beginning, and his destruction of her husband Uriah. Then we move on to David’s son Amnon’s assault on the sister of his brother Absalom and how Absalom did away with Amnon in revenge, then flees. As I said, very heavy. Joab, a relative and military commander of David’s, knew David longed to see his son after years of his son being in exile. So, in 2 Samuel 14, Joab sent a woman to the King dressed as a widow. She presented the case of her supposed son’s killing of his brother and how he lived in exile because of it. She asks the King to pardon the son, which he is willing to do as well as provide protection from anyone from taking her life because of the judgment. God is so Good

I wrote this post during the pandemic about our friend, Dr. Charles Boleyn, and his love for the song, “God is so Good." I was unaware at the time that someone had recently taken that chorus and written powerful new verses to it. Recently, while practicing the song for worship, I couldn’t help but think again of our friend, a mentor to so many in ministry. As I sang the song, I found it a comfort because challenging things were happening in my life, but I remembered as our friend always said, God is still good. Like me, maybe you need to hear this again today, too, courtesy of the Lord and our friend, Dr. Charles Boleyn. For various reasons these days, I’ve been especially thinking about our dear friend and mentor Dr. Charles Boleyn. But then again, he was such a great influence in our lives, there’s always been much to remind me of His life and legacy. Hold On, Hope On

As the sleet pounded the ground outside our den, Jerry pointed to the window and remarked, “That tree has buds on it.” He’s not a big noticer of that kind of thing, but our Japanese Magnolia is loaded with buds right now. I always hope the tree will hold off blooming until the last cold snap so that the flowers don’t get zapped. I suppose Jerry, like me, was looking for a sign of spring in the midst of these frozen days. Looking ahead, there’s only more of the same in the forecast. But the buds are tight, safely enveloped in their icy cocoons, holding the spring that is yet coming. As the magnolia blooms hold fast in this hard winter, when we face our metaphorical hard winters, it is sometimes challenging to continue holding hope in our hearts. When tomorrow and the day after just seem like more of what’s happening at present, it can feel as if we’ve sprung a leak, with the hope ebbing away.
