When it's time to declutter

I read an article recently written for younger folks on how to avoid drowning in your parents’ stuff. Trying to save my kids from that, I spent week before last cleaning out a backyard building that resulted in two SUV loads going to a donation site and the county landfill. I’ve really put those recently installed plates and screws in my formerly fractured wrists to the test, and they have proved up to the task. There is still too much clutter in that building. I’ll have to make another pass. The problem for me is I’ve inherited things from my own parents, and it’s so hard to let go. Here in an edited repost, I am sharing one of my favorite messages for Holy Week today. Dear friends, have a blessed Holy Week and Easter. May His presence be especially real to you during this Holy season. My neighbor’s apple tree used to branch over into my yard each spring allowing the people at my house to enjoy the blossoms. Later in the year, the deer made nightly excursions to devour apples that hung on its low branches. The tree was planted by the family who first built the house next door. In fact, they called the tree by their daughter's name as her daughter planted it when she was just a little girl. The former neighbors passed many years ago but the memories of the apple tree they planted and the fruit it bore are still with me. The other night at a festive gathering, everyone was asked a question related to Christmas. Mine was “What is your favorite Christmas song?” Oh, mercy. As I said that night, I couldn’t even give you my top ten Christmas songs, much less a single title. So, I answered with two. One was the well-known, “Joy to the World.” The other is lesser known, and has a title that seems sad, but the lyrics are deeply touching to me. It is “In the Bleak Midwinter.” When I searched my blog and found I had not written about it before, I was shocked, because it is such a favorite of mine. It comes from a poem written by nineteenth century poet, Christina Rosetti. Rosetti had her struggles. In her adolescence her father became ill and passed away after a few years. The family struggled financially, and Christina suffered from depression, but faith became a powerful force in her life.
