For many, the Christmas season is a hard time for various reasons. For some, the loss of loved ones is more keenly felt this time of year. For others the bright wrapping and lilting carols stand in contrast to an ongoing struggle with sadness, or serious illness. Like so many, we watched as scorched earth images flashed across the television screen shocking with the widespread wildfire damage in California-- personal stories, one after another of those who have lost everything. Our hearts sagged again from the suffering of others. It seemed only yesterday we viewed the hurricane devastation in the southeast, where many victims are still struggling with the loss of their homes representing a lifetime of memories. And still, a threat remains in California where firefighters and first responders from across the nation continue to put themselves in harm’s way to help. As I watched the news, a wave of despair hit me. For a moment, it threatened to overwhelm in the face of such destruction. How do we even pray for these folks? That’s when I remembered what happened during worship earlier that morning. I had almost cried when we came to a lyric taken perhaps from Isaiah 6:3, “his bright glory fills the whole earth.” On my heart was the desper...

As I write today, the wind howls and meteorologists are promising frigid weather for the next several days. The weekend may include precipitation in undetermined kind and amount. Mercy. My Canadian and northern U.S. friends are probably laughing at my winter weather issues, but we folks in the South live in the sunshine and struggle with these arctic blasts. It’s about this time of the year I start watching in nature for a hopeful sign of spring. I can usually count on that coming in the form of a crocus. The crocus dates to at least several hundred years before Christ and is included in writings from most of recorded history . Saffron which is taking form the fall blooming crocus is mentioned in the Song of Solomon (4:13-14) and is one of the most expensive spices in the world.
