Beside my computer, I have an index card on which I’ve written words that hit me hard when I read them again about a week ago. I share them here in the event someone else needs to hear them, too. These are from the works of L.B. Cowman, “Bakers of bread for others to eat must be very careful to husband their strength. They are not much seen, but much felt; unknown multitudes would feel their loss, and their failing means others famishing.” The writer has likened the baking of bread to those who minister in the Lord’s name, sharing the bread of life. Perhaps we consider what we do for the Lord a small thing, but only God knows the ripple effects of it. And because of that, we must guard our lives from the pilfering that so easily happens with too much on our plate, screen distractions, or other ways our strength can dissipate sometimes without our even knowing it. When His Faithfulness is Great

I had a decision to make, and the indecision had haunted me for weeks. And then as I prayed and read my daily devotions one recent morning, there it was—the clear answer. The experience reminded me of verses I’d recently read in Lamentations, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). God had been faithful to give an answer, maybe not in my time, but certainly in his. Thomas Chisholm wrote a hymn from these verses in Lamentations called, “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” while working as an insurance agent. I’m sure life had not gone as he’d planned. Born in a Kentucky log cabin in 1866, and without a formal education, he still began to teach school at sixteen. After becoming a Christian at twenty-seven, he served as an editor for the Pentecostal Herald and went on to be ordained as a Methodist minister—but only for a short time, as difficult health issues forced...

When you need to wait

High in the seventies today—makes me want to plant something. But echoing in my ears are the words of my dad who grew up in a farming family and always reminded me this time of year when I reached for my garden spade to put flowers or vegetables in the ground, “We’re going to have more cold weather, you better wait.” Wait. Now there’s a word for you. Easy to say. Hard to do. When things start turning green, I just know I can get around our last freeze date for our planting zone of April 15. But more times than not, when I ignore the wisdom of those who know better than me, I wind up replacing what I’ve planted as the last frost takes my tender shoots out. Patience is not my strong suit, and the Lord is still working on me for sure. Maybe you, too. In other situations, I also want to jump ahead.
