Just out: A NEW THING, a small town romance

If you are looking for a sweet, small-town romance with all the southern, cozy feels—A New Thing could be the book for you! A story of second chances and forgiveness, this heartwarming Christian fiction will invite you into the lives of unique characters in the charming town of Worthville, touching on challenges of the empty nest, running a business, complex family relationships, and the possibility of romance. A delightful, encouraging read… perfect, of course, with a glass of sweet tea! —Laura Thomas, award-winning Christian fiction author

In Search of the Painted Bunting is a poignant and perceptive portrait of a young girl struggling with timeless challenges. Cornelia Taylor is on a quest to find an exotic bird, the Painted Bunting. But, like all quests, her path does not go on a straight line. It branches out in unexpected ways as Cornelia navigates the turbulent 1960s, as well as the turbulence in her family and at school. The discoveries Cornelia makes and the lessons she learns along the way are just as relevant today. This story raises important questions for every reader. What is your Painted Bunting? What is your quest? And how does God speak to you and lead you along the twists and turns of your path? I highly recommend In Search of the Painted Bunting, as it explores the joys and heartbreaks of adolescence. It will inspire you to search for your own elusive Painted Bunting. - Doug Peterson, Author of over 40 VeggieTales books

The wedding and what we can't imagine

In a flurry of white and bountiful blooms, our son and his new wife were married this past week. It was a relatively small gathering with family and a few of our son’s and his wife’s friends, but an occasion of such joy, we thought we might just float away. And even the rain which had threatened for hours held off giving us an evening of undampened celebration. As always at weddings, I came away wishing I had more time with everyone. I wanted to speak more with my sister and her family whom I don’t see very often and the sisters of my new daughter-in-law’s mother. I’m sure we would have found much in common. I longed to spend more time with my son’s friends, several of which I have known since he was in high school. But the moments ticked away, leaving us hoping for another time. C.S. Lewis once said, “The fact that our heart yearns for something Earth can’t supply is proof that Heaven must be our home.” I long for more time with those I love, but one day, time will give way to...

Marching in the Treetops

After having just defeated the Philistines, David once more found himself threatened by them. What to do? Instead of going off his own idea, he chose instead to ask the Lord what to do just as he had so many times before. In fact, this may have been one of the reasons God called him a “man after my own heart.” (Acts 13:22). God was faithful to respond. “As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you …” (I Chronicles 14:15). It was as the Psalmist said, “a sign of God’s goodness” (Psalm 86:17). David waited to hear that marching, and then God gave him victory. This story gives us a pattern for our own lives. First. When we face a battle of any kind, we first go to the Lord and ask what we should do. We sometimes struggle with dashing into action before taking the time to pray and then regret our impulsiveness. Best to pray first. Second . We wait for God’s guidance and ...

Hearing and Answering

While in worship recently at a sweet baby dedication, we sang a song whose lyrics in part came from Psalm 34:4. In fact, the pastor, to emphasize a point, used them in a sermon. I dug a little deeper into the meaning of the verse. In the NIV, it reads, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” ” In other translations, it is "I sought the Lord, and he heard me." T he lyrics have “He heard and He answered." When I went to the original Hebrew word, anah, for answered or heard in that verse, I found that it means both heard and answered. For God to hear means for God to answer. I began thinking of all the times just recently, where my prayers have been heard and answered. Many, many times. He heard, and because he did, he answered. That Hebrew word also means shout, sing, testify, and bear witness. Honestly, it kind of bends my brain that one word can hold so many nuances of meaning. But when God answers our prayers, we should want to ...
