When there's another season of waiting

On a recent beach trip, I rose earlier than my crowd to take painting reference photos at sunrise. I’m always surprised to see how many folks are on the shore that early in the morning waiting for the sun to peep above the horizon. With beach blankets spread, entire families gaze east waiting for the fiery gold and orange hues to spread across the sky. Words from the Psalmist come to mind, “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning” (Psalm 130:5-6). That word wait in the original language has some interesting nuances. It can mean bound together, expect, hope for or look for. In seasons of waiting, when we don’t know what the future may hold, our best and highest path should be to watch for the Lord and trust his word. The wedding and what we can't imagine

In a flurry of white and bountiful blooms, our son and his new wife were married this past week. It was a relatively small gathering with family and a few of our son’s and his wife’s friends, but an occasion of such joy, we thought we might just float away. And even the rain which had threatened for hours held off giving us an evening of undampened celebration. As always at weddings, I came away wishing I had more time with everyone. I wanted to speak more with my sister and her family whom I don’t see very often and the sisters of my new daughter-in-law’s mother. I’m sure we would have found much in common. I longed to spend more time with my son’s friends, several of which I have known since he was in high school. But the moments ticked away, leaving us hoping for another time. C.S. Lewis once said, “The fact that our heart yearns for something Earth can’t supply is proof that Heaven must be our home.” I long for more time with those I love, but one day, time will give way to...

When the unexpected gifts help

I am happy to be back in this space but will only be posting bi-monthly for the time being. Still a lot going on. The project Jerry and I have been working on is nearing completion, and it looks like we are going to survive the process (laughing here). Hopefully it will be out sometime in September. I also have another book in the hangar and am trying to get that one out before Christmas. Here’s hoping. For better or worse, we’ve had company almost all summer. They dropped in around June 1, and though somewhat reticent in their social interactions, they show no sign of leaving. For the second year in a row, one of our neighborhood does selected our home as her birthing spot. The twins she bore in early June stayed mostly out of sight unless their mama was with them, but more recently have ventured forth in broad daylight to bask in the sun, give Lucy the old Aussiedor a little excitement (She could never catch one. At this point she can hardly see them), or get a drink from a baby ...
